The importance of activities in residential care.

« Richmond Care Home

Why are activities important?

Nursing home activities are more than just passing the time. There are endless mental and physical benefits of activities for nursing home residents.

Improving Mental Wellbeing

Activities can bring a great sense of achievement to residents as well as entertaining them and passing the time. That’s why here at Richmond our fantastic activities coordinator plans lots of games, baking activities and arts and crafts activities for our residents to enjoy and participate in.

Promoting Physical Health

Many of our residents have physical care needs which can sometimes limit their physical activity and abilities. We carefully plan activities such as armchair exercises and dancing which can be adapted to each individuals personal abilities so everyone can get moving.

Sensory Activities

Senses can become weakened as we age, we try and base as many of our activities at Richmond around the 5 senses; smell, touch, taste, sound and sight for example, we often do sensory painting and crafts with a range of different textured materials to stimulate the senses.

Reducing Loneliness During Covid-19

Being in residential care can sometimes feel isolating, especially during the pandemic when the government guidelines put a stop to nursing home visits to protect residents from COVID-19. Our activities coordinator worked harder than ever to organise outside visits and socially distanced entertainment in the garden to make sure our residents something to look forward to each day.
